Put church on Repeat. The music your family hears while joining others to worship in a church community can be a powerful way for your young child to connect to faith language. If you can access recordings of the music sung and played at your church, put them on your at-home or on-the-go playlist.

Sing faith songs during transitions. Music helps signal to your child that a change in activity or location is coming. When you pair transitions with a song that affirms that God is with us during times of change, you teach your child about God’s presence during the in-between times too.

Teach new faith words through music. Singing is one way for children to learn new words. Introduce words such as grace, forgiveness, and blessing through song so that children hear them sung before having longer conversations about what they mean.

Sing your prayers. Whether you compose a prayer song for your family, make up a new melody each time, or use a familiar tune, singing your prayers helps your child

pair melody with words of praise, thanks, and asking God for help.

Get close. Singing to your child as an infant and with your child as a toddler and preschooler is a meaningful way to bond and develop closeness while you introduce words and melodies.

Build your repertoire. If you don’t know many simple faith-based songs, search online, ask a teacher at a Christian preschool or day care, or ask your friends what they sing. By sampling a range of songs, you can choose the ones that best fit your voice and comfort level.
